The Baobab Tree - “ The Tree of Life ”
The Baobab Tree is also known as the “Tree of Life” and “The Chemist Tree” which grows in Central and West Africa.
The scientific name is Adansonia Digitata, which is a deciduous tree that can reach 30 meters (90 feet) in height and 15 meters (45 feet) in
diameter. Its short, bottle shaped trunk can store up to 30,000 gallons of water during the dry season which serves as a water storage for
the villages. It can live up to 5000 years and is protected from fire due to its spongy wood. Viewed by the native population as the symbol
of the Continent and as a Protector, the Baobab has been valuable for humans and animals as it has been a natural source of food and medicine
for thousands of years. The tree has also been dubbed “The Monkey Bread Tree”.
The Baobab Fruit
The tree bears fruit once a year, which is then harvested by the local population. The fruit pods
contain naturally dehydrated fruit pulp,
seeds and fiber. The fruit pulp is a non-processed and organic raw material, which is mechanically separated from the seeds and the fiber.
In traditional African medicine, the Baobab is used to treat fever, diarrhea, dysentery, malaria, smallpox and inflammation. The high content of
dietary fibers (22% of soluble fibers and 23% of insoluble fibers) makes it a very effective ingredient with pre and probiotic-like effects that can help
regulate the functions of the colon and intestines. The pulp possesses strong anti-oxidant characteristics and hepatoprotective activities.
The essential amino acids present in the pulp are a great source of energy. Naturally high in
Vitamin C (six times that of an orange) the pulp contains other vitamins (A, B1, B2, B6 and PP) and minerals (calcium, phosphorus, potassium, iron,
sodium, zinc and magnesium).
The Baobab fruit pulp can be used
in water or juice as a refreshing and healthy drink. It can also be used in functional-food applications,
including beverages, energy drinks, yogurts, sauces, cereal bars, as well as in nutraceutical applications for dietary supplements.
The Baobab fruit red fiber and seeds can be as well incorporated in functional food and nutraceutical formulations. The red fiber is proven to be a powerful
anti-oxidant and the seed endocarp has naturally occurring Omega 3, 6 and 9.
The pulp, leaves, red fiber and seeds provide botanical extracts
used in the cosmetics industry to make oils, nourishing creams, anti-oxidant formulations, masks, shampoos, conditioners, lotions and exfoliants.
Baobab Fruit will be covered in a forthcoming Research Council report on African fruits.
